Restaurant Review: Hatari

Overall Rating: 7.8/10
Address: 18 Bhupen Roy Road, Behala, Kolkata
Cuisine Type: Chinese and North Indian

Hatari enjoys immense popularity in South Kolkata. They have pioneered in the Gariahat branch and following immense success, expanded to Tollygunge, Behala and Garia. I, Red Chilli, frequently drop into this outlet and am quite fond of their services. For this review I went with a friend of mine who is not an enthusiast of Chinese cuisine – he prefers Mughlai/Indian. Thus, I being a lover of Chinese food and my companion not, we had a balanced audience for the review.

Pros and Cons
A brief summary of this restaurant review:
Pros
1. Cleanliness and hygiene
2. Informative staffs
3. Quality food
Cons
1. Time taking
2. Chicken Sauté with Mushrooms is let down in terms of quantity of chicken bits
3. Bit costly

Our Platter

1. Chicken Sauté with Mushrooms

Decoding the dish: Cripsy sauteed chicken on sticks and juicy roasted mushrooms served with ketchup.

WWEat Thinks: Although, the chicken was supposed to be the main element of the dish, the mushrooms outperformed it. The succulent yet crunchy mushrooms fortified with tongue tickling flavours will keep you asking for more. The chicken was extremely crispy on the outside but medium rare (à point) inside.

2. Mixed Thai Noodles

Decoding the dish: Steamed noodles with bits of chicken, shrimp and egg.

WWEat Thinks: The quantity is enough for two people. Nothing distinct in terms of taste, except it was fresh and the shrimp added a certain chomp factor to the dish.

3. Mongolian Fish

Decoding the dish: Fish balls in sauce (more like a gravy).

WWEat Thinks: Fair warning, the starter as well as the sides section of the menu offers this dish. If you are looking for dry snacks, then this is not it. We ordered the dish in the starter section and it coated dipped in a gravy like sauce. The Mongolian Fish is a sweet and mushy ensemble of Chinese flavours. It is soft with smooth texture that nicely complements as a side dish. However, those who have a penchant for zesty dishes may get a bit thrown off by the sweetness.

4. Crispy Chilli Mushroom

Decoding the dish: Mushroom fritters fried in herbs and chilli sauce. Primarily soft and moist than crispy.

WWEat thinks: Thumbs up to the restaurant for quantity. Just have it supper with any refreshment and you would be surely full.

The Restaurant

The ambiance is good, ideal for a family dinner and there were no discernible lacking in terms of hygiene. The staff is well-behaved and friendly. What we liked most is that if the waiting time is more for a certain dish they will inform you beforehand. They informed us that Chicken Saute with Mushrooms would take at least 20-25 minutes. Therefore, we would have to wait a bit for the same.

We conclude that those succulent, delectable and scrumptious mushrooms were worth the wait. I, Red Chilli, is indeed a huge mushroom fan and keep trying and testing them in my kitchen. Besides, I never miss the opportunity to try mushroom dishes, especially while exploring new Chinese restaurants. So when I put my stamp and say that these were the best mushrooms I have ever tasted, that's saying something.

Overall, it was a good dining experience. Hatari is a fine restaurant with strong commitment towards quality and customer service that has ensured the brand a good reputation. If you are a foodie in South Kolkata, chances are, you have already been there.

Okay folks, time for Red Chilli to sign off. Green Chilli is enjoying her holidays kicked by a sudden fever. We’ll come back next time with more reviews and insights on the one thing we live for: Food :D
